Early in his political career he became a card carrying member of the Ku Klux Klan which he renounced later on in his political career usually around reelection time. He has made several memorable quotes from those years:

I shall never fight in the armed forces with a Negro by my side... Rather I should die a thousand times, and see Old Glory trampled in the dirt never to rise again, than to see this beloved land of ours become degraded by race mongrels, a throwback to the blackest specimen from the wilds. ”

— Robert C. Byrd, in a letter to Sen. Theodore Bilbo (D-MS), 1944,

I know now I was wrong. Intolerance had no place in America. I apologized a thousand times... and I don't mind apologizing over and over again. I can't erase what happened. ”

— Robert C. Byrd,

However, he joined with Southern and border state Democrats and helped filibuster and vote against the Civil Rights Act of 1964 but when politically expedient and up for reelection in 1969 found the courage to step up to the plate and vote for the Civil Rights Act of 1968.

Spend Baby Spend

Labeled the "King of Pork" by many, which isn't very far fetched if you look into West Virginia and what has been named for him and his wife. An award winning spender and chairman of the appropriations committee won the coveted "Porker of the Month Award " four times in 2001,2002,2003 and 2006 plus the much sought "Porker of the Year" title in 2002.
